Acne Medication
The Trouble With Prescription Acne Medication
The use of prescription acne medication is increasing in our drug-dependent age. While almost everyone gets acne at some point, some people develop such severe acne that many doctors treat them with prescription acne medication. But these acne medications can have potentially serious side-effects.
Perhaps the most well-known acne medication prescribed is Accutane (isotretinoin.) Given to patients suffering from severe cystic acne, Accutane use must be strictly controlled. The patient’s blood must be monitored for acute, short term effects, which include elevated liver enzymes, elevated triglycerides, and a drop in white blood cells.
Using Accutane as an acne treatment also increases the risks of birth defects if a woman becomes pregnant while using the drug. It is recommended that women wait at least one month after quitting this acne medication before trying to conceive.
Another prescription acne medication, spironolactone, is not used on males because it may increase breast size. Women planning to conceive within six months are cautioned against its use, because spironolactone can feminize a male fetus.
Minocycline, an antibiotic acne medication, can cause the patient’s teeth to develop a bluish tint and turn gums a blackish-blue. It may control acne, but you won’t want to smile about it.
There are other prescription acne medications available, such as Renova and tetracycline, but they can have troubling side-effects as well.
