Eating Chocolate Causes Acne – And OTHER Acne Myths
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that eating chocolate – or french fries, or pizza – causes acne, I’d be richer than Bill Gates. (Well, I’d at least be able to buy – and enjoy – a LOT of chocolate.) But the fact is, it’s just not true.
The fact is that studies have found NO connection between diet and acne. Granted, eating a healthy, balanced diet is important for health and well-being, but eating poorly will not cause or worsen acne. If you FEEL that eating a certain food causes you to break out, then stop eating that food – it’s most likely junk food you can live without anyway.
More Acne Myths
Acne is caused by poor hygiene.
False. Acne is not caused by dirt or oil on the skin – it starts UNDER the surface, where washing doesn’t reach. In fact, if you wash your skin too hard or too often, you will only irritate your skin and might actually make your acne worse. Wash your face gently twice a day with a mild soap and pat dry.
Acne is caused by stress.
False. Sure, stress can cause any number of health problems, but acne is not one of them. However, severe stress is sometimes treated with drugs that can cause acne as a side effect. If you develop acne after starting the use of a new medication, or believe that a medication you’re currently taking may be causing acne, speak to your doctor.
Acne just affects how you look.
False. Sure, acne does affect the way you appear to other people. It can leave physical scars as well. But it can also affect how you look and feel ABOUT yourself, and cause emotional and psychological scars too. Plus there are reports that some presription acne medications can cause depression and even suicide in some patients. Feeling bad about your acne is one thing — feeling bad about yourself is something else entirely. If you do feel down on yourself because of your acne (or any other reason, really) get counselling.
And finally…
