Acne Scar Treatment

Acne Scar Treatments DON’T Have To Be Painful Or Expensive

All too often, after acne has run it’s course, it leaves behind pigmented, elevated, or depressed acne scars. Modern medicine has developed several acne scar treatments which, while fairly effective, are expensive, seldom covered by medical insurance, and can take a long time in healing.

Dermabrasion, or surgical skin planing, is an acne scar treatment in which the skin is frozen and then a specialized instrument is used to “sand” the skin. This improves skin contour as a new layer of skin replaces the treated skin. The new skin generally has a smoother appearance. However, the skin will feel like it was severely “wind-burned” for several days after these acne scar treatments; the physician may prescribe a pain medication or recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever during this time.

Chemical peels, also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, are also used as acne scar treatments. To do this, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes it to “blister” and eventually peel off. The new skin which results is generally smoother than the old skin surface. Most patients experience a warm or stinging sensation during these acne scar treatments, and sometimes pain medication is prescribed to lessen the discomfort. There is a risk of developing a temporary or permanent color change in the skin.

Laser resurfacing is a relatively new treatment for acne scar removal. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at the acne scars. Laser skin resurfacing removes skin very precisely, layer by layer, resulting in fewer problems with lightening of the skin color. These acne scar treatments are known by several other names, including lasabrasion, laser peel or laser vaporization. However, if you have active acne or if you have very dark skin, you can not use this method.
