Blackheads

Don’t Squeeze Those Blackheads – Prevent Them!

Sure, it’s tempting to squeeze your blackheads in the hopes of getting rid of them and clearing up your skin. But don’t do it! You’ll just be asking for even more trouble if you do.

What are blackheads, anyway? Blackheads are simply “open pimples” – sebaceaous follicles plugged with sebum, dead cells and sometimes bacteria. They are called blackheads because the surface of the plugged follicle has a blackish appearance.

The plugged material in a blackhead is constantly being extruded from the follicle to the skin’s surface. However, squeezing blackheads in an attempt to remove them instead forces the infected material deeper into the skin. This can lead to not just inflammation, but also infection and possibly scarring as well.

Not only should you not squeeze your blackheads, you should also avoid the so-called “blackhead extractors” often advertised in magazines and websites. It’s better to simply leave blackheads alone than risk spreading infection and injuring your skin while using such devices. Blackheads will rarely become inflamed if they are simply left alone.

If you are prone to blackheads (or any type of pimples) be careful of the skin and hair-care products that you use. Some such products can cause outbreaks when used on or around the face and other acne-prone areas. Be sure that any such products you use are labelled “noncomedogenic”, which means they do not cause comedones (the scientific name for blackheads, pimples, zits, etc.) to form.
