Cystic Acne

Cystic Acne – What Is It And What Can You Do For It?

Cystic acne is a more severe form of acne, and as such is more difficult to treat. Rather than the more common pimples and blackheads, cystic acne is marked by the formation of cysts under the skin. These acne cysts are sac-like lesions containing a liquid or semi-liquid mix of bacteria, dead cells and white blood cells. They expand into deeper layers of skin, are often severely inflamed and painful, and may also result in scarring.

If you have cystic acne you should never, ever pick at or try to “pop” a cyst. If you squeeze an acne cyst it can break open under the skin and spill its mixture there, leaving the skin looking very red for weeks and often resulting in hyperpigmentation, a discoloration of the skin’s surface.

Mild cases of cystic acne can often be treated by injecting the acne cysts with a steroid medication which helps to shrink the cysts. This is mainly used when someone has just a few persistent acne cysts. Sometimes, oral antibiotics are used instead of or in conjunction with these injections. Also, topical medications such as Retin A, Avita or Tazorac are used on a daily basis to help protect the skin from developing cystic acne.

Probably the most effective and most controversial treatment for severe cystic acne is the use of the drug isotretinoin, or Accutane. It is a very potent drug. While it is very effective in treating all forms of acne, including cystic acne, it can result in very severe side effects. There have been many reports of patients who have become psychologically depressed, even suicidal, as a result of using isotretinoin. It can also cause severe birth defects in children, so it can not be used by women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are currently breast feeding.
